Close the work you have finished

Start with the tabs and documents that are open right now. Save what matters, bookmark the page you need later, and close the rest. It’s easier to tidy a workspace when you can see the job you’re actually trying to do.

Name files for your future self

A file called final-final-new is a small mystery waiting to happen. Use a short project name, a useful description and a date or version where it helps. Keep new material in one temporary folder if you can’t sort it immediately, then give that folder a regular clear-out.

Leave yourself a starting point

Before you stop, write one line about what comes next: finish the introduction, check the figures, or reply with the revised outline. Put the right document where you can find it. Tomorrow’s first ten minutes will feel less like trying to remember yesterday.
