Work on one shelf at a time
Take everything off a single shelf and put back the things you reach for or enjoy looking at. That might be cookbooks, a bowl from a trip, or a framed photograph. Starting with what matters is easier than trying to fill the shelf according to a rule.
Give the objects some breathing room
Try a few books stacked flat beside a taller piece. Leave a gap. Step back and see what catches your eye. If an arrangement feels fussy, remove something before adding another object. You can make a shelf feel different without buying anything.
Keep it comfortable to live with
Put the books you use where you can reach them, and keep heavy or fragile pieces in sensible places. Then leave it alone for a few days. A shelf can be a little uneven and still feel right. It should belong in your room, rather than look borrowed from somebody else’s photograph.
