Choose something you want to open

The book beside your chair doesn’t have to be the one you think you ought to read. A few essays, an old favorite or a book full of photographs can be just right for a slow half-hour. Pick for the mood you’re in.

Make it easy to stay for a while

Find a seat with decent light and put a drink within reach. If your phone keeps interrupting, leave it across the room. You don’t need to finish a chapter. Read until you want to pause, or until it’s time to do something else.

Keep a thought, not a score

If a passage stays with you, jot down why in your own words. A line or two is plenty. Over time, those little notes become a record of what interested you. That’s often more enjoyable to look back on than a tally of pages or books finished.
