Take the familiar turn

Choose a short route you already know and walk it without trying to get anywhere quickly. Keep to places and conditions you’re comfortable with. The point isn’t to find an undiscovered attraction; it’s to notice what usually slips past.

Look for one kind of detail

Doorways, shop signs, trees, painted walls: give your attention something small to follow. You might notice a pattern in the brickwork or a window full of plants. If you stop for a photograph, be considerate of people and private spaces.

Bring one detail home

Write down a sentence or make a quick sketch of something you liked. It doesn’t have to be impressive. Next time you walk the same route, you’ll probably notice something else. Familiar places can feel richer without changing at all; sometimes you’re simply paying a different kind of attention.
